Southwoods Prison High Pressure Hot Water System
Bridegton, NJ

This project involved the abandonment and replacement of portions of the existing underground high temperature hot water distribution system, with a new above ground high temperature hot water distribution system, on the premises of the existing South Woods State Prison. The majority of the project was performed in an occupied, secure detention facility. The piping system consists of: 450 structural steel columns with caisson and helical anchor foundations supporting 9,000 lineal feet of insulated piping, 37 structural pipe bridges, through wall penetrations and tie-ins to multiple existing building systems, roll supports and hangers, valves and anti-freeze assemblies, and new underground tunnel from the central plant building into the secure area. Also included was underground electrical conduit, wiring and devices, razor ribbon, and the furnishing of security cameras, controllers and interconnecting fiber-optic wiring. Bedwell performed survey, layout, excavation for and installation of the underground portions of the new system: structural support foundations, precast concrete tunnels, precast concrete access vaults and manholes; installation of new structural steel tunnel piping and support framing.
